New Years Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are the main topic around this time of year. We see this time as a way to start clean to hit a new goal. Whether it is a health, spiritual, financial, or personal goal. But what we don’t realize is that not a lot changes from year to year and majority of us fail at most of them.

The reason why I think that is, is because we underestimate how much it really takes to change an unhealthy habit. We normally get started on these things we want for the new year, but once we see that it is not happening right away, we give up for a while, sometimes completely.

dear self new yearSo instead of creating the same resolutions you set every year, come up with some alternatives that can help you start your healthy lifestyle and keep it permanently.

Instead of saying something like, “I will start doing 100 sit ups a day” or “I will do the plank/squat challenge”, say “I will incorporate more ab exercises and cardio into my workouts.” Don’t say “I will exercise every day”, instead say “I will move every day” or “I will exercise 3-5 times a week”.

Why is that? Doing sit ups won’t make you skinny, it won’t make you lose belly fat. Plus, you don’t become fit by working out every single day. You become fit by finding a balance between work and rest. Exercising every day can actually make you weaker because it break down your body. Resting will help your body recover itself and get ready for the next time it is challenged.

Also, don’t say “I will stop eating unhealthy food” because you don’t want to restrict yourself some food, because this will more likely drive you to fall faster and harder than before. Instead, say something like “I will eat a balanced diet with room for treats with moderation.” And don’t use the word “cheat” because it suggests that what you’re doing is wrong, when it’s not.

So take some time to think about what you really want to accomplish this new year, and the reason why. Will it make you happy once you achieve it? If not, don’t waste your time on it. If you really do want to change your lifestyle, be realistic with your goals, and focus on finding things that will make this shift a lot easier. Most importantly, take care of yourself.

Be happy with what you have but work

Here are some few tips that can actually help you stay committed and consistent with your goals:

  • Write them down. If you write them down or see a picture of it daily, it will make it easier for you to remember it.
  • Visualize yourself at your goal. How would you feel if you were already there? If you already had that thing you wanted? Think about it constantly.
  • Look at the bigger picture. Don’t let the little things distract you. The doubters, self doubt, temptation, don’t let it stop you.
  • Be grateful for your support system. Get rid of any people who are toxic and bringing you down. If they are not supportive of your goal, they don’t need to be a part of your life. Be grateful for those who do.
  • If you make a mistake, it’s ok. We all screw up once in a while. It is ok. The world won’t end, life goes on. Just pick the pieces back up and keep it going.

You won’t be perfect, you have to realize that. But don’t give up. Continue to work hard on your goals until… no ifs or buts. Demolish your goals. I hope these tips can help you a bit, they have definitely helped me in the last few years.  I hope that you achieve everything you want in life and that you live the life you so deserve.

CHANGE YOUR MINDSET, CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

What a powerful thing to say or even think about. You mean to tell me that if I change the way I think about something, it will change it? That if I change my mindset, it can potentially change my whole life? YESSSS, my friend. It can.

Confident-MindsetListen, even the greatest leaders in the world have lack of self-confidence at certain points in their lives. Self-confidence is not a quality that you have, and that’s it, it stays forever. Self-confidence is a type of mindset that takes a lot of effort to maintain, specially when things get tough.

Some of the things that you can try to help you work on this mindset are:

behappy.jpgStop focusing on the negative and only allow positive energy in your life. If you think positive, positive things will come to you. Avoid the negative self-talk that can make you feel less confident. Smile, be happy and Surround yourself with positive people. This will help you feel better and those around you.

Learn how to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Learn how to be aware of your self talk, the thoughts you have about yourself and the things that you are doing. If you are doing something and suddenly a negative thought pops in your head, KILL IT, then replace it with a positive one. This goes hand in hand with last week’s post about Daily Affirmations.

Take time to be thankful and grateful for the things in your life. Keeping a journal to write these down is also extremely helpful. It will help you develop a confident and peaceful state of mind. 

BeConfidentAct on it. Its one thing to think positively, but it is another when you actually put those thoughts into action. Have you heard of something like, “fake it ’til you make it”? This is what they mean by it. You have to act as if you have already achieved what you so deeply desire. So if what you really want is to be confident, then act like a confident person. Present yourself in a way that tell people you are ready to master any situation. If you look confident and act like it, not only will you feel like you’re in control, but people will have more confidence in you as well.

Dress the part. When you look better, you feel better. If you wear something that looks good and makes you feel good, it will automatically increase your self-esteem. Make sure to also speak with confidence. Fix your posture, stand tall and straight. This is such a simple thing, but it makes a huge difference in how people see you.

SmilePractice being self-confident on a daily basis and you’ll see how soon it will become second nature. Inaction only brings doubt and fear, while action brings confidence and courage.

You are what you think and do, so if you change your thoughts and actions to positive ones, you will become more positive. Put the right energy into your actions.

Changing your mindset is not easy, but it is one of the most powerful things you can do. First you need to learn to recognize your negative mindset and from there you will be empowered to make the necessary changes to start seeking out positive. If you do this, it can turn your entire life around.

Avoid Cravings & Temptations!

          Aloha!! Has this happened to you? You just had lunch, but then 30mins later you remember you have some chocolate in the fridge, so you eat it. Then another 30mins go by and you start craving something salty and as if they read your mind, your coworker comes in with some chips to offer. By the time you know it, you’ve had about 3million calories in just one sitting.

          Well, that was me a few years ago, and even sometimes during that time of the month. As you may have read on my last blog, Oh Boy! Oh Boy! It’s almost here! mother nature was blessing me with something. But in all seriousness, we all go through it. We all get cravings or are constantly tempted to eat something that doesn’t necessarily go according to our meal plan.

          Let’s be honest, improving your eating habits is hard, and for some reason this is the exact time when your family decides to be super nice and offer everything they have. But trust me, its doable; it just takes consistency, dedication, discipline and willpower. Always do everything one step at a time.

          Most of these cravings are because of our hormones, stress, anxiety or even dehydration. But there are different things that you can do to switch your mindset and avoid them.

Here are 7 tips to help avoid cravings and not fall into temptations:

    1. Have a hearty breakfast. Eat a good balanced meal with low calories but enough protein and carbs, to help maintain your sugar levels and to help you stay satisfied throughout the day. This is why I love my Herbalife Shakes, because they are super simple and have what my body needs. You can also have eggs with some oatmeal, yogurt with nuts, and others.
    2. Replace your cravings with healthier options. Choose low processed carbs to keep your blood sugar levels steady. This means, no fries, crackers or chips, and going for whole grains and starchy veggies, such as sweet potatoes, beans, lentils, peas, squash, and others. Bake them instead of frying for a healthier option. Instead of chocolate, try snacking on nuts. If you want ice cream, try a sorbet or frozen yogurt. There’s always healthy options.
    3. Snack throughout the day. Technically, to maintain a healthy metabolism, you should be eating every two to three hours. This means that you should be having your three main meals and having healthy snacks in between, to keep you satisfied and avoid feeling famished and pigging out.
    4. Always be prepared. Have a plan. Prep your meals and snacks ahead of time, cook them at home. This will help you avoid having to run to the store or the vending machine for the quick unhealthy solution. Making them at home helps you have control over what goes into your food. Preparation is KEY!
    5. Drink lots of water throughout the day. Having a glass of water can boost your blood flow and can also help you feel full. Most of the time we feel hungry, when in reality our body is just dehydrated and needs some water. Try using a big water bottle like this really cute one, to help you keep track of the amount you have daily.     6. Get plenty of sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause your body to crave more calories to be able to get the energy it needs to keep going.
    7. Change your mindset. Be mindful when you experience these cravings. Visualize your goal. Is having that going to get you closer to it? What are the consequences of you having it? Say “I don’t” instead of “I can’t”. What you say to yourself plays a big role in your life. Saying “I can’t” is sending a message to your brain that you are forcing yourself not to do something, while saying “I don’t” is reminds you that you are in control and have power over what you do. I can’t is a restriction and I don’t is a choice.

              But like I also mentioned on my last blog, if you’re really craving something, just have it. Sometimes depriving ourselves from something will only make the craving bigger. Of course, make sure that it is not something you are doing on a regular basis, because then what is the point of trying to be healthy. Remember, everything in moderation. But if you know you have been behaving, following your plan, then WTH! Just have it!
